Portrait sessions will take place September 2026. Stories will be featured throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN A PORTRAIT
Cancer may become part of a woman's story. It doesn't get to become her whole story.
Portraits of Strength was created to celebrate the woman beyond the diagnosis—the woman who is still beautiful, feminine, powerful, vulnerable, joyful, complicated and completely herself.
This September, I will photograph 10 women whose lives have been touched by breast cancer. Throughout October, their portraits and stories will be shared as a celebration of resilience, hope and the many different ways strength can look.
This isn't about photographing cancer.
It's about photographing HER.
WHAT DOES STRENGTH LOOK LIKE?
There is no dress code for strength.
You don't have to wear pink.
You don't have to wear a gown.
And you certainly don't have to show more of your body than you're comfortable showing.
Come in the dress that makes you feel beautiful. Your favorite jeans. Something soft. Something bold. Something meaningful. Barefoot on the beach. Covered from head to toe. Whatever feels like you.
If there's an item that has meaning in your journey - a piece of jewelry, a scarf, a letter, a photograph, something you carried through treatment - you are welcome to bring it.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Portraits of Strength is open to adult women whose lives have been personally touched by breast cancer, whether you are:
Newly diagnosed
Currently undergoing treatment
Recently finished treatment
In remission
Years into survivorship
Living with metastatic breast cancer
Then a beautiful simple sentence:
There is no “right” point in your journey to deserve to be celebrated.
WHAT THE 10 SELECTED WOMEN RECEIVE?
If selected, you will receive:
A complimentary Portraits of Strength photography experience in September.
Guidance preparing for your portrait, including wardrobe recommendations.
A professionally retouched digital portrait chosen from your session, gifted to you with no purchase required.
The opportunity to share your portrait and story as part of the Portraits of Strength October campaign.
There is no obligation to purchase anything.
Additional portraits and specially created Portraits of Strength artwork collections, including the Warrior Album and portrait collections, will be available for those who wish to purchase them.
YOUR STORY. YOUR CHOICE.
You are always in control of your story.
You may be comfortable sharing everything.
You may want your portrait shared but not the details of your diagnosis.
You may want your first name used but not your full name.
You may be comfortable sharing your written story but not speaking on camera.
Or you may simply want to talk with me before deciding.
We'll decide together what feels right for you before anything is published.
Because storytelling is an important part of Portraits of Strength, preference may be given to applicants who are comfortable having some portion of their portrait and/or story shared publicly. Your comfort and privacy will always be respected, and you will have a say in what you choose to share.
NOMINATE SOMEONE YOU LOVE
Maybe this isn't your story.
But you immediately thought of hers.
If there's a woman in your life whose strength deserves to be seen, you can nominate her for Portraits of Strength.
You don't need to tell us the private details of her medical journey. Simply tell us why you thought of her.
Every nominated woman will ultimately decide for herself whether she wants to participate and what she feels comfortable sharing.
MEET THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Why I Created Portraits of Strength
I believe there are moments in a woman's life when she deserves to be reminded of who she is.
Not who the world sees, or what she's been through, or what may have changed.
Her.
My work as a photographer has always been about more than creating beautiful photographs. It's about giving women an opportunity to see themselves differently—to recognize their beauty, their strength, their femininity, and sometimes pieces of themselves they may have forgotten were still there.
That is the heart behind Portraits of Strength.
Breast cancer can ask so much of a woman. Her body may change. Her hair may change. Her relationship with the mirror may change. Life itself may suddenly be divided into a before and an after.
But there is so much about her that cancer does not get to define.
I created Portraits of Strength to honor that woman.
The woman who is newly diagnosed and still finding her footing.
The woman in the middle of treatment who may not feel particularly strong right now.
The woman celebrating remission.
The woman living with metastatic breast cancer.
The woman who finished treatment years ago but carries that chapter with her still.
For this project, I'm inviting 10 women to step in front of my camera exactly as they are.
There is no expectation to look a certain way, dress a certain way, hide anything, or reveal anything.
You decide what strength looks like on you.
Maybe it's a beautiful dress blowing in the Gulf breeze. Maybe it's jeans and bare feet. Maybe it's something intimate and vulnerable. Maybe you want to proudly show the parts of your body that tell your story. Maybe you don't.
This isn't about photographing cancer.
It's about photographing the woman cancer could never take away.
And when you see your portrait, my hope is that—for even a moment—you don't see a patient, a survivor, a diagnosis, or a statistic.
I hope you simply see yourself.
Beautiful. Powerful. Worth celebrating.
Exactly as you are.
GIVING BACK
As part of Portraits of Strength, a portion of artwork purchases from this special project will be donated to a local organization supporting women affected by breast cancer. The benefiting organization and additional details will be announced soon.
FINAL CALL TO ACTION
Finish with another strong portrait.
10 women.
10 stories.
10 reminders that there is so much more to a woman than what cancer tried to take from her.
